GovCamp North - back in 2023

Tuesday 17th January 2023

In January 2023, we will hold the third GovCamp North to bring the people who work in and around the public sector together to share ideas and learn from each other how to make public services better. This time GovCamp North will be a face-to-face event at the
Digital Media Centre in Barnsley.

We have also teamed up with UK GovCamp to create a whole week of GovCamp events.

What will happen at GovCamp North?

GovCamp North will include elements of an un-conference (in the tradition of the long running UKGOVCamp events). This will give everyone a chance to share their ideas, thoughts, plans and experiences and to find others to provide feedback and support for them. In the great spirit of an unconference, these sessions do not need to be pre-planned and can be run by any of the attendees. This makes it a great opportunity for you to find people who are tackling the same issues as you and learn from each other through sharing your thoughts and experiences.

Who is it for?

GovCamp North is open to anyone who works in or around public services. Whether they are in local government, a central government department or ministry, or if you work in an arms-length-body, agency or third sector organisation delivering or supporting public services. Can suppliers attend?
People who work for suppliers to public sector organisations are also welcome to come along and participate in the spirit of openness and sharing.
Just for the North?
GovCamp North has been set up to provide better access to people in the north of the UK, but it is open to anyone and everyone.

Our principles

GovCamp North has been founded on a number of core principles that guide how we will design, plan and conduct the event. These are:

  • Inclusive - above all we want to run an event where everybody feels safe to attend and experiment, regardless of your background, job or ability. We will be purposeful in our attempts to be truly inclusive.

  • Honest - we want it to be about having honest and frank conversations.

  • Fun - taking part in an event like this should be fun for participants. We want to provide something different from other forms of learning.

  • Open - let’s share our learnings with everyone. From planning, to pre-events, and learnings from the event itself.

  • Growth & learning new things - we want people to experience personal and professional growth by attending. Taking away something tangible.

  • Reflection - We want to encourage more reflection in the public sector, let’s start by helping GovCampers reflect on their experience.

  • Improving the public sector through public servants - we are all about improving the public sector. We feel we can do that by helping create better public servants.

  • Test - this should be a safe space for people to try new things and get support in making them better.

  • Collaboration - we are all about helping people connect and collaborate. Whilst it’s a one day event, we want the relationships and collaboration to continue outside the event. Let’s learn from each other.

  • Attendee led - the attendees are the ones that make GovCamp truly great. We will set up in a way that allows attendees to take the lead.

  • Community - we want GovCamp North to create a sense of collaboration, camaraderie and ongoing community, much like UK GovCamp. We want the relationships and collaboration to continue outside the event, let’s learn from each other.

Support and sponsorship

Events like GovCamp North cannot take place without the support of organisations who understand the great value in building strong communities of people who want to make public services better. We already have the welcome support of DMC Barnsley, but we will need more organisations to come forward and offer support and funding to allow this event to happen. If you work for an organisation that could support GovCamp North, then please get in touch. We have a number of sponsorship packages that will fit your budget and provide you with recognition for your contribution.
